. THIS WEEK'S SYNOD. The Methodist Synod of tlie TaranakiWauganui district is to hold its'eessions in the Whiteley Memorial Church during the present week. To-night and to-morrow ministers, home missionaries, and lay representatives will be arriving from places as distant as Opunake and Waimarino. The Synod opens on Tuesday morning with a conference on evangelism, and on the teaching in the Sunday schools in the light of modern knowledge and discovery. The afternoon session will be given to questions of ministerial character, and the examination of candidates for the full work of the ministry. The laymen's session commences on Wednesday, and will be continued on Thursday. The business takes into consideration practically every part of the church's work and life. Public questions are certain to have a place in the discussions, and strong resolutions are likely to be forthcoming on such matters as indentured labor in Samoa, and the possible increase of totalisator permits. The Synod will include a social function, at which a. welcome will be extended to the Synod by :the deputyMayor, and words of welcome spoken by the local clergy and ministers. The Synod sermon will be preached by the Rev. James A. Hosking, of Eltha-m, and a united communion service will follow in which Christian people from all denominations will join. The Synod will conclude its sessions on Thursday afternoon.
