FEDERAL BASIC WAGE.
EXPLANATION BY PREMIER. Kr Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. - Melbourne, Nov. 24. The basic wage fell with bombshell effect throughout Commonwealth industry. Mr. Hughes, in a lengthy explanation of the Commission's findings in the House of Representatives, said the Government had rejected them. The full wage should not be paid to all workers, irrespective of their dependents. The Government would consider a scheme with a basic wage of £4, with an endowment of 12s for each child. To obviate employers giving preference to single men it is proposed that employers should pay a uniform rate of £4 with a per capita amount for each employee, which will be pooled for endowment purposes, Mr. Hughes added that the Commission's findings, if given ctl'ect to, would result in an economic revolution. [Tlie basic wage was put at £5 10s to £5 17s except in Perth and Brisbane.]
