BOXING.
TOURNAMENT AT STRATFORD RUTHERFORD BEATS WITHEY. (By Wire,—Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night The boxing tournament held in the Town Hall to-night under the auspices of the Stratford Sports and Pastimes Club was attended by a very large number of spectators, and some first-eiaag boxing waa witnessed. The professional contest between Mick Ruttoerford (Sydney) 9.10, and: Harry Withey (Dunedin) 10.8, for a purse of £l5O went the full fifteen rounds, and was remarkable for its cleanness throughout. Both contestants showed a'high order of skill, and the fight was one \of the best ever witnessed in Taranaki. Rutherford displayed remarkable cleverness in evading Withey's determined attacks, while his Own attacks were a trtot to ■witness. A feature of the fight was the jsplendid sporting spirit on both sides, and the referee's decision in favor of Rutherford was a popular verdict. There were no knock downs during the fight. The decisions of the referee in the amateur bouts were as follows: Heavyweighti—Whittahtor (Pahriefrston North) .12.10, heat Scott (Wanganui), 11.4. " Middleweight. - Canute (,'iratford), 11.4 v. Davis (Palmerston North), 11.4, was declared a draw. Welterweight. Clarry (EJtham) 1010 beat Duggan (Normanby) 10X lightweight.—Coombes (Oaonui), »)t) beat Sharrock (Stratford), 9.0.
