Also ran: Ruatara, Perfect Day, Archie, Prince Charleroi, Oorregidor, Independence, Gatherer, Guianform, War Tank, Commission, Tsangarch, Cantoris, Some Fashion. Pavilion was fancied for the Hack Hurdles, but fell early, the winner proving to be Shell Shock, who was second on the opening day. Lombard)- may have won had Warner elected to go on the outside instead of looking for an opening on the rails, which never came. Multiplane was a fair third in front of the disappointing Octoplete. Kiriwinning, the winner on the opening day, did not go kindly with the rise n poundage, and is only moderate, but Coroglen may do better later on in the same class. Landslide, in the Cautley Handicap, had every show out with the leaders, but was beaten into. third place by Crowhurst and Dribble. Crowhurst's win was overdue, but there was nothing meritorious about his neck victory, and the plates may easily have been reversed with him and Dribble. The rest were of the moderate class. With dose on Forty horses engaged in the Vauxhall Handicap, a few of the contestants bad to stand behind the main line at the starting point. Royal Mark drew No. 1, but was squeezed out and was never "seriously in the picture, the running being carried on by Fallwin and Rcretoa at the home turn, when Queens Up, a daughter of Our King, loomed u|> and won nicely in Goldfinch's bands,\ with Illumination, who put. in a late challenge, second, and Fallwin third, just in front of Jaffna. When the winner drew 24th position at the barrier her trainer made an effort to scratch her, but fortunately for the connections this was not allowed. That the handicapping of Cleft at Tat. for the St. Andrew's Handicap was distinctly favorable to his prospects was proved when he ran homo in front with Gray in the saddle over a stone overweight. Ratblin was the pacemaker to the straight, when Oleft put in his claim and won handily from Tinopai, with Lord Kenilworth and Gold Kip irt line for third money. The latter Was finishing on determinedly. Actrice was never seriously troublesome, while Sir Ralph broke down in the race. Munus and Amorel carried the bulk of the investments in I7ie Rakino Handicap, but the first day winner Oranga again got the money from Gray's mount, Namuterc, many people thinking the latter won. It was a very close thing. Amorel was third, after being well placed throughout, but Munus did not like the turns on the course, though he was finishing on nicely. Gray scored another victory on Scrap o' Paper in the Pupuke Hack Handicap, i Bute Sound was among the first to be-1 gin, but he was pinched back to the aitddls of th« Mi, and aftwttwdi J«t ]

up a great fight to finish second. Gray's mount drew a, bad position at the post, but was lushed round tba home turn first, and was kept at it until the stake was secure. The Gisborne pair, Tieki and Prince flewelj proved disappointments. ■ There was trouble over the Jtawan Hurdles event from the last fence home, and the stewards held an inquiry, which lasted till long after the last race. Owing to Keystone running in Bome interference with Luperino, both Tenacious and Scottish Knight between the pair closing in on Luperino and forcing him back' to fourth position. In the run home Keystone, Tenacious, Scottish Knight, and Luperino was the order past tho judge, but when the inquiry was over the race was awarded to Tenacious, with Scottish Knight second, and T. Chaplin, the rider of Keystone, was suspended for three months. ,He was rather unfortunate, for his I mount displayed a tendency to run in on the rails Maori Tikanga, though outside a place, showed some promise for future hurdle events. After the good display on the opening day, the English" horse Prince Willonyit was strongly favored in the Welter, and he showed himself up as a horse of class. He was among the early leaders, but was back in the middle of the field at one stage, and then forced himself through the field to come on strongly and defeat Ohinewairua, who came round' the home turn full of Tunning, Forest Gold was third. The winner is now being talked of as an Auckland. Cup possibility, and being a good winded horse he cannot be discarded. . If the Cup mission is serious, he may be" seen out in the Waipa Oup before then. An unpleasant feature of the day was that horses trained by W. Olive and D. Winder were not allowed to start owing to those mentors having appeared on the forfeit list while their horses were nominated. It now appears that some of the entries of their teams for future events may become void.
