At a special meeting of the Inglewood County Council yesterday. Mr. A. Corkill was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. A eable from London says that Farer and Mcintosh have been awarded the Air force Cross in recognition of their valuable services to aviation' by their Wight to Australia, Mr. John rtrunton, headmaster of the I-Jokitika district -high school, has been appointed headmaster of the Waimate district high school, in succession to Mr. A. Bain, who has been appointed inspector of schooli-. At a special meeting of the Taranaki County Council yesterday a resolution of regret at the recent aviation fatality, and of sympathy with the relatives of the victims of the accident, was passed in the customary manner. At a special meeting of the .Stratford County Council Jield yesterday, Cr. E. Walter was unanimously re-elected chairman on the motion of Cr. T. R. Anderson, seconded by Cr. W. W. Were. The death is recorded in a London cablegram of Admiral Sir George Callaghan, who was Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet on the outbreak of war. Sir George, who was 07, was one of the ablest men in the British Navy. He served through the war, and was appointed an Admiral of the Fleet in 1917. In 1900 h e saw service in China.
Lieutenant-General Sir John Monash, having submitted his work on "Australian Victories in France in 1018" as a thesis on the subject of engineering applied to modern warfare, it has been examined by the professors of engineering in Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide, and passed as qualifying him for the degree of doctor of engineering. This is the first occasion on which a candidate has qualified for this degree in any Australian university. ,' The transfer of Mr L. B. Campbell, district engineer for Taranalti for the Public Works Department, was the subject of some comment at the special meeting of the Taranaki County Council yesterday, when the chairman' (Mr. .T. S. Connett) moved a motion of regret at Mr. Campbell's transfer so soon after i his appointment here, and expressing aj preeiation of the manner in which he had carried out the duties in connection with his- position, and the amicable relations between him and the council during the time he has been in the district. At the statutory meeting of the Taranaki County Council yesterday, Cr. J. S. Connett was re-elected clvjirman for the ensuing year, on the motion of Crs. J. Andrews ait* A. Morton, botli of whom spoke of the appreciation felt of Mr. Connett's work and assured him of the unanimous support of the councillors in carrying out the work of the council. These remarks were cordially endorsed by the other councillors present. Mr. Connett suitably acknowledged the compliment.
