A POACHER AT BAY.
I SIEGE IN SWISS VILLAGE. London, Nov. 7. An affray recalling the battle with the mad Chinaman in Sydney, who was shot by an American, is reported by the Times correspondent at Vevey, Switzerland, where a poacher, in avoiding arrest shot a policeman and wounded a gamekeeper. lie then entered his home, barricaded the doors and windows, and held out all Friday night and yesterday, though surrounded by an army of police. A feature of the affair was a midnight parley with the Mayor, who addressed the from the roof of a neighbouring house. The poacher's house could not be set on fire owing to its proximity to other cottages. The fire brigade turned their hoses on it for an hour, without result. Finally sulphuretted hydrogen was introduced into the roof through tube*, whereupon the refugee emerged and was handcuffed and arrested.
