A motion of condolence with the relatives of the victims of the recent aviation tragedy at New Plymouth, was carried in silence at Saturday's .meeting of the Stratford County Council, the members staiuling. i The death occurred at Morrinsvillc on 'Monday evening of Mr. .lames Blain, an old and respected resident of the district, at the age of 06 years. Mr. Blain came to the Waikato from the South Island 35 years ago. As only one candidate, Mr. R. MeK. Morison, was nominated for the five -seats 011 the Stratford Hospital and Charitable' Aid Board to represent the Stratford County, the County Council waa called upon at its meeting on Saturday to fill the four remaining vacancies.' Crs. J. O'Neill, J. T. Belcher and Mr. 13. Marfell were nominated, and it was decided 'to fill the remaining vacancy at the next meeting. Mrs. Jane Little, who (lied at her son-in-lawls residence, Parkhurs't, Helenarecently, in her 97th year, arrived in Auckland bv the ship Matilda Wat onbeck in 1882, with her husband, Mr. William Little, and a family of six. They proceeded to Paparoa, where they resided • for a number of years, and removed to Helensville about 3D years' ago. ' The district staff of the Public Works Department at Stratford met on Thursday afternoon to say farewell to Mr. L. B. Campbell, District Engineer, who has been promoted to the Otago district. On behalf of the staff, Mr. Lawn asked Mr. Campbell to accept a smoker's outfit as a token of the esteem in which he was held, and wished him every success in his new district. .Mr. Campbell, in reply, thanked the staff for their loyalty during the period lie had been in charge of the district and assured them of his pleasure in accepting their gift and good wishes. Occasion was taken to welcome Mr. T. M. Ball, who is now taking charge of the district. "One of the best-known members of the police force in New Zealand, Inspector Cruickshank, of Greymouth, is retiring at the end of the year. Inspector Cruicksliank was born in Scotland, and joined the police force as a trooper On the Otago goldfields in IS7S. Tn 18S0 he wastransferred to ftunedin, and after spending ten years there went to Lower Hutt, where he took charge. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1900, and transferred to Wellington, whence he went, two years later, to Dannevirke as officer in charge. While stationed, at Napier in 1911 he was made sub-inspec-tor. Subsequently lie waa stationed at Duuedin, Timaru, and Auckland, until, in 1915, he was promoted to his present 1 position of inspec'tor-in-charge of the West Coast police district. Inspector Crnckshank has to his credit such difficult pieces of police work as the apprehension of Bosher, the I'etone murderer, whom he brought to book single handed. The inspector intends making a. trip to Scotland in January to visit relatives and friends.
