DISTRICT NEWS.

RATAPIKO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Despite the very unfavorable weather conditions on the night of November 3, quite a large crowd came along to help us to give our boys a really good and genuine welcome. Visitors were present from most surrounding districts. It vas especially pleasing to note how the boys kindly accepted our invitation. Dancing commenced early in the evening, excellent music being provided by three players, Misses Gwen Therkleson and Claja Hogan and Mr. Jack Twigg. The floor was quite at its best. Supper was daintily served by a number of the ladies. During the evening songs were given by Messrs J. Howard and Rae and Miss Hogan, and added greatly to the evening's enjoyment. Extras for the dancing were played by Miss Agnea Dravitzki and Mrs. Rae.' Mr. E. Grigg carried out the duties of M.C. and everyone, stranger or otherwise, wan made to feel quite at home. Shortly after supper Mr. Charles Therkleson was called upon to welcome the boys, on behalf of the Ratapiko residents, and, after his welcome. "For They are Jolly Good Fellows" was sung with great vim. Afterwards Mr. James (one of our returned boys) responded, and cheers were given for the "boys" and, at a gentleman's request, for the ladies. Dancing then concluded the evening. It was unfortunate for our Tariki friends that they were stranded on the way, owing to something going wrong with the car, driven and owned by Mr. Dave Kendrick. However, after a few tries they got it to go again, and were with us about 8.30 p.m. But, unfortunately, Mr. Kendrick found it impossible to take his car home, so it had to be left until next day. Many thanks to Messrs Wells and Summers for taking our visitors home. This entertainment was a credit to the few ladies who organised it. It is whispered that the boys are thinking of returning the compliment. They are somewhere near thirty in number. The church people here are very busy now working for the Queen Carnival and Christmas fair to be held in Inglewood on December 11th., and it is to be hoped the public will kindly help us when we have socials, etc. Miss A. Heatley is standing for Ratapiko. We are all pleased to sec the vicar, the Rev. Mr. Stanton, back again after his trip to Auckland, and also to see him Ipoking so well. His cheerful and friendly disposition is ever welcome amongst his people, and it must be remembered that in coming out here to hold services for such a few is purely | jelf sacrifice, and such surely is worthy of help. We are pleased to see Mr. Norman Dowries hack from the hospital again after his severe and trying illness, and ft Ebb Ma a- igss'djT t»awgjg
