EVILS OF TAXATION.

PHENOMENON OF HIGH PRICES, By Telegraph,-\Presa Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 18, 10.20 p.m. London, Nov. IS. My. R. McKenna (a former Chancellor of the Exchequer) speaking at Manchester University, emphasised the evils of excessive taxation, which impounds savings, and deprives commerce and industry of an essential condition of growth. Moreover, in order to meet the demands of the next collection, traders were forced {o borrow, and such loans had given an increase in purchasing power without a corresponding increase in commodities. Hence there was a great increase in the velocity of expenditure, which was the cause of the curious phenomenon noticeable since the armistice, whereby increased production had been accompanied by rapidly rising prices.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
