DISTRICT NEWS.

WAI-TOI-TOI. (Fioin Our Own Correspondent.) The interest taken In the recent. Comity Council election was alown by the large number of votes recorded. Mr. R. A. Plgolt leaded the poll with 102, whilst Mr. S. Sutton, with 84, was only one ahead of Mr. Campbell, and Mr. C. Musker secured 71, Mr. Herbert being the lowest with 25. Mr. Tigott has been n member of the Council for many years, and was chairman of the retiring body. Mr. Sutton is a new member and should prove a most progressive one. Sir. C. Musker, who represented Uruti on tie old council, will be greatly missed, more especially by the ratepayers in the backblocks, for whose Interests he was always a warm advocate. Too much consideration cannot be shown for those of our settlers who aro stuck away in the mud, both by the Government and the local bodies, and as our member (Mr. W. T. Jennings) 1 think once said, it would not be giving too much if they were allowed their sections rent free tlio first few years, till they lad decent reads and could make them pay. And yet we And writers who are probably scarcely ever off tre pavement, who begrudge them (after years of hard toil and privations) market value for their produce, and accuse tliem of profiteering, etc. If they received lis per lb for their butter-fat some of these sturdy pioneers would not ho overpaid for what they have gone: through. At tbe last Urenui sale, held by Newton King, Ltd., the house adjoining the saleyards was bought by Mr. Alf. Smith for £.150, whilst the outbuildings were purchased by Mr, S. Sutton for £lO. I understand the house is to be removed to Wai-toi-toi, and will form a residence for Mr. E. Mouat, who owns tbe Tupara estate. Mrs. Rockeit's property at Onnero was also put up, but failed to find a purchaser. The Urenui cricketers are doing well so far this season, having secured wins against Tlltorangl and Inglewood. The juniors will pity tleir first match In the Saturday competition against High School A on the Urenui ground on the 20th. A most successful dance was held in the .Urenui Hall on Thursday evening last, there being a large attendance from various parts of the district. The music was supplied by Miss A. Terrlll, whilst the duties of M.C. were successfully undertaken by Mr. D. George. An enjoyable" supper was handed round during the evening, and the proceeds of the evening will form a welcome addition to Ihe funds of tre cricket and tennis clubs. When tbe news came through on Thursday last of the sad fatality in New Plymouth, it caused quite a shock to tho community, and many residents who had left town after witnessing the successful flights of the aeroplane could scarcely credit that such an awful tragedy could have occurred so stortly after they had gone. A large number visited New Plymouth on Sunday to attend, the funeral of the late Captain Russell and Mr. Clarke.

Mr. A. H. Halconibe was returned unopposed to represent this district on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The suggestion made by Mr. G. P. Finlay (the .Mayor of To Kuiti) that this end of the Waitomo electorate should be separated from that portion of the district and connected with an electorate at tlis end, is worthy of (I'lisiderntiou, as no doubt our interests are more directly connected with New Plymouth than with To Kulti. Sueli an extended constituency entails a lot of hard travelling on the part of Its representa-
