' A drover who receives fairly constant employment earns big wages. For six days' work a drover who was given charge of eight bulls in the Hawke's Bay district, received £2fi 5 3 ;,, fees, au average of £4 7s Cd per day.

Reports of good catches of trout have been received from Rotorua and Canterbury, A visitor from South Africa caught 16 fish, the heaviest weighing fi lb, in Lake Rotorua one afternoon, and another angler landed a nine-pounder. On Saturday a 71b trout wus caught at the mouth of the Ashburton river.

At a meeting of the employees of the manufacturing chemists held in Christchurch, it was unanimously resolved to apply for registration of a union covering the occupation. Proposals for working conditions are to be drawn up after registration U secured, and forwarded to the employers.

A substantial increase is shown in the Customs revenue collected at New Plymouth during October as compared with the same period of the previous year. The Customs revenue was £l2,sf>S and the beer duty was .f2!)3 Is .Id. The 11)19 returns were: Custom's £7994 12s lOd, beer duty £194 2s 2d.

Twenty-one applications for soldiers' loans, etc., were before the Taranaki Land Board at yesterday's meeting. With reference to the New Plymouth aviation tragedy, the following paragraph from an article in the current number of The Dominion Motor has peculiar interest:—"As showing the necessity for frequent grounds suitable for landing being made over future air routes in the Dominion, Captain Russell related to the writer (Mr. H. Bateson) :i near shave he had when on his trip from Auckland io Wellington. Captain Russell decided (o endeavor to make the stage of his journey between flisbornc and Hastings, a distance of about S.l miles, a non-stop flight. After flying -for an hour, the engine suddenly petered out. Luckily ihe 'plane was over practically the only landing ground between Oisboriie and Napier. Had the accident —which was caused through the contact-breaker points becoming stuck—occurred at any other stage of the flight, it is probable that the machine would have been smashed beyond repair, while even fatal results might have attended tlia accident."

At the iast meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce an invitation was extended to Mr. YV. A. Beddoe, Canadian Trade Commissioner, to visit Taranaki and deliver an address on New ZealandOnnadian trade matters. Mr. Beddoe Las replied accepting the invitation. A deputation representing the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce journey to Mokr.n district to-day to investigate the coal deposits that have been found some distance below the present uiines. The postal authorities have received advice from London that a mail was dispatched for New Zealand on November 12 per Paparoa, via the Panama Canal. The a.s. Toyo Maru sailed from Newcastle on November 13 for Wellington. She carries a small Australian mail.

At yesterday's meeting the Taranaki Hospital Board accepted an offer from the nursing staff to organise the raising of funds to meet the cost of tiling the floors in the kitchen block in the nurses' home, now in course of completion. The chairman (Mr. M. Fraser) recalled that at last meeting a proposal from the medical superintendent to have the floors tiled instead of in colored concrete was rejected on the grounds of cost, the additional expense involved being £475. Although members thought then that the tiles would make the more satisfactory job of the two, they had to conserve the money raised in connee- 1 tion with the Home, as the furnishing expenses had yet to be met. The nursing staff, however, were anxious to see the work done as previously suggested and had oirered to work towards securing funds. The Board decided that if £2OO was raised they would find the balance, and it was also resolved to thank the staff for their offer.

The pressure on 'the accommodation at (he liangiatea Home was mentioned by the chairman of the Taranaki Hospital Board (Mr. M. Prnser; at, yesterday's meeting. He stated that recently applications from Haweva and Stratford for admission had to be refused, and lie would like it to be understood that that course was only adopted as the Board had no room. He expressed the opinion that the Board's first duty was to provide for the aged of its own district. It was elicited during discussion that a proposal had been made that the Boards of Taranaki should combine in maintaining an old people's home, but this was not acceptable to the Hawera Board, who had in view the utilisation of the present hospital as an old people's home in that town in the future when a new hospital was built.

Tn in yesterday's issue to the concert to be given to-morrow evening in aid of the Clarke Memorial Hostel, the name of Mr. A. B Mac Donald was by error omitted. Mr. Mac Donald will sing, and also Mrs. John Frasor, one. of .Vew Zealand's leading sopranos, whose songs will include "The Nill" and "Softy Awakes" and ''The Flower Song.'' The Wellington papers write most appreciatively of Mrs. John Fraser, who sang there on Tuesday night, and her visit here is much looked forward to' A special feature of "The Drenm of Fair Women" is the splendid scenery depicting a wood and glade, which has been specially painted by Mr. A. M. Bradbury.

On Saturday next the Slower stall in XeW Plymouth, in connection with the bazaar in aid of the Girls' Hostel fund, will be managed by the nurses of New Plymouth hospital. Donations of flowers and button-holes will be gratefully received. i At their Douglas Ards on Monday Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., offered on account of Mr. A. St. George, a very choice line of 15-months Jersey heifers, which realised £l4.

On Monday, 20th inst., Newton King, Ltd., will oflcr for sale by auction at their Mart, a block of country situated on the Okoke Road. A portion of this land has been felled, part of which is being dairied on at present.
