STRATFORD RETAILERS' ASSOCIATION. Stratford, Nov. 10. The annual meeting of the Stratford Retailers' Association was held last evening, the president, Mr. C. E. James, presiding over a good attendance of members. The report and balance-sheet, a summary of which has already been published, were adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr. C. IS. James; vice-president, Mr. C. Martin; hon. secretary, Mr. E. Marshall; executive committee, Messrs H. Masters, G. O. Rimmington, G. T. Walters, A. Manoy, R. 1). Lewers, E. Carryer, and H. Summerheld. It was decided to close all shops from 10 o'clock on People's Day of the Stratford .Show (November 25). It was also decided to apply to the Railway Department asking that the Whangamomona train be delayed until 9.30 p.m. on Christmas' Eve, as was done last year.

A lengthy discussion took place regarding the days of closing for the Christmas and New Year holidays, and eventually it was decided to close on December 25 and 27 and January 1 and 3. An amendment that December 2S be observc|l as, a holiday was defeated.

GENERAL. At last night's meeting of the. Borough Council a recommendation was received from the Electric Light Committee that applications be called for the vacant position of electrical engineer, at a salary of £350 per annum. An amendment was moved by Cr. J. H. Thompson, increasing the amount of the salary to £375 per annum, and this was seconded by the Mayor. The amendment, on being put to the vote, was lost, and the recommendations of the committee were adopted.

The Mayor has decided to call a public meeting for the purpose of explaining the loan proposals to the ratepayers immediately after the Stratford Show next week. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council it was decided that li.he Mayor be the only speaker at the meeting, but that ail the councillors should occupy seats on the platform. In reply to a question by Cr. C. Jackson, (lie Mayor stated that the amount the council could expend each year out of the loan monev was limited to £IO,OOO.

Some months ago the Stratford Borough Council decided to {rive it guarantee to the Public Works Department that the council would take 3000 yards of metal from the Mt. Egmont quarries during the fhvt year they were opened. As the total ,'iinnunt required to lie guaranteed by local bodies in Taranaki before the Minister of Public Works will proceed with the completion <if the railway line to (lie quarries lias nol yet been reached, and in view of the fact that 30(10 yards would be insufficient metal for the Strafford Borough, the council last night agreed to increase the quantity of metal it was willing to take to 10,000 yards.

A brief meeting of the Stratford Borough Council, sitting us tisc Domains Hoard, wa< held last nteht. The report of the caretaker dealing w ith matters attended to during llio past month was adopted. An application by Mr. ,T. Gray for the exclusive right to graze sheep in Victoria Park for one vear was refused.

The Stratford Borough Council lias telegraphed to the Minister of Finance asking .for authority to take steps towards raising the proposed loan of £129.000 for various borough improvements.

Members of the Strat(ord A. and P. Association are reminded of the working lice to he held at the showgrounds on Thursday. Luncheon will be provided.
