BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Beautifying Society was held last night, Mr. E. C. Hughes presiding. THE SOCIETY'S WORK.
The annual report stated: Shortly after our last, meeting the committee made arrangements to clear up and improve .Baine's Terrace. Many superfluous willow trees on the banks of and lying across the Huatoki were out down and° removed, and much wild undergrowth on hoth banks was cut up and burnt. The river path was cleared and formed and was extended to the neighborhood of the gravel pit. The clearing of the eastern bank of the Huatoki exposed to view the foundation walls and mill stones of the old flour millan historic building dating back to the forties of last century. Only want of money prevented the work being thoroughly completed. As it was, the expenditure left the committee in debt, so much so that the antumn and winter planting of fern trees and flowering shrubs which was contemplated could not be undertaken. Pern trees suitable for transplanting are not so readily attainable as formerly. The committee have other work in prospect, but its being undertaken is just a question of funds. Application was made to the Borough Council for a grant, hut the council could not comply with the request owing 1 to tightness of funds. The thanks of the society are due to Messrs Burgess nnd Fraser for the gift of a length of wire rope, which it is hoped to utilise as a guard for the dangerous part of the path ascending Pnritntu. i The treasurer's report shows a balance on hand of £1 Os 10d, and that the } debts amount to £2O lVs. Seeing what 1 Wanganui, Auckland, Wellington, and other" towns are doing, hoth municipally and by voluntary subscriptions _ and labor, it is incumbent upon the citizens iof New Plymouth to he up and doing if the town is to have the full benefit of its natural advantages.
