GIRLS' FEES INCREASED, The monthly meeting of the New Ply* mouth High Schools Board yof v Qovj ernors was held last night. Presents' Messrs. L. C. Sladdt;n (chairman), gS. CL Smith, M.P., .1. S. ' .Mr. Mfoyea, principal of the Soys' High School, stated in his report," that during the month the work of the (chool had been seriously interfered wife 04 account of the prevalence of nilaslce, and that a number of examination candidates were at present laid up. » The want of 11 sick room had caused ff considerable amount of anxiety. During October; eight candidates sat for degree examinations, and five had been successful. In connection with the boarding department, the principal recommended that additional accommodation be provided, and that 'the number of boarders be limited to 170. Montosa, he - eald, had proved quite unsatisfactory a« a residence, and it would not be wise to use it for next term. A horse mower which had been ordered, had not yet come to hand, and by some mistake a road grader had been forwarded to the school in its place, and all trace of the mower had been lost.
Miss Barr, principal of the Girls' High Scliool, reported: "I would suggest that the Weekly ■ boarders pay a minimum fee of '£l4 per term instead of £l3 as at present, and am agreeable that the fees of term boarders be also raised if expenses in connection with the house are to increase, as it is evident will be the CMe. I also advise that the fees in the preparatory school be raised to ,£3 10s as suggested by the department. Suoh an increase would make it possible tomake the salaries of preparatory teachers to correspond with those of primary school teachers. The introduction of type-\ writing would make the commercial! course complete, and I should like an arrangement made by which the course cpuld be made complete.. As I understand that the Supreme' Court will be •sitting, in New Plymouth on December 2; I would like 'the presiding Judge to be asked to speak at our breaking-up ceremony." 4 GENERAL. It was resolved to have the boarding establishments disinfected during the term holidays, as a preventative meat-, ure in view of the extraordinary amount of sickness which had prevailed recently.
The secretary was authorised to send the Board's congratulations to the rifle shooting team, who lmd been so successful in the recent competitions, and to the successful candidates in the late examinations.
The fees at the Girls' High School were increased by £1 per term, the increase to take effect as from the first term of 1921.
