EXPULSION MOTION
CASE OF am. MAHON. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyrisht. Melbourne, Nov. 11. In the House of Representatives Mr. Hughes moved a motion for the expulsion of Mr. Mahon in view of his disloyal utterances. Mr. Mahon was not present, but wrote to Mr. Hughes regretting Ms absence and stating that He was unaware that the oath of an Australian Parliamentarian tied him in allegiance to Mr. Lloyd George. He submitted that the terms "illegal" and "disloyal" were not applicable to his speech. At the conclusion of Mr. Hughes' speech, Mr. Tudor moved an amendment: "That the House, while opposed to sedition and disloyalty, is of opinion that the allegations against Mr. Mahon should not be dealt with by the House, as they do not concern his conduct in Parliament, and the .judiciary has ample power to bring any person to trial for sedition and every person eo charged is entitled to 3 public trial by a jury of his peers." Melbourne, Nov. 12. In the House! of Representatives, Mr. Hughes, in a speech, declared that Mr. Mahon was doing his utmost to fan the flame between England and Ireland and to help in the disintegration of the Empire. He covered the honoured name of the Empire with the foullest slander and cruelly insulted humanity and'the overwhelming bulk of his fellow citizens. Mr. Mahon's attack was made deliberately. It was part of a world-wide conspiracy that had.become apparent since the war. A heated debate followed, the Labor Party charging Mr. Hughes with attempting to stir up sectarianism.
The Government proposes to force a division before adjourning. The Mahon expulsion motion was adopted by 31 votes to 17. It was strictly a party division.—Ails.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
