He wan greatly interested in the Volunteer, anA . afterwards the Territorial organisation, He was a Magistrate for both Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. In his younger days he played a great deal of cricket, both at Oxford and afterwards for his ■ county of Nottinghamshire.
