SHIPPING FREIGHTS.

THE COMPANIES' RATES. PRODUCERS DISSATISFIED. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) , Wellington, Last Night. An inquiry concerning the action, if any, that the Government intended taking in connection with the recent report of the Agriculture and Stock Committee in regard to shipping freights, was put by Mr. W. H. Field (Otaki) to the Prime Minister to-day. The farmers are producers, he said, and were looking to the Government to protect them, and to secure a reduction of freights to reasonable limits.

Mr. Massey said that he had very little to add to what lie had already said on tliß matter. A very representative meeting of producers was held in Wellington some time ago, to consider shipping and other matters, and wlien the session came to an end he proposed to meet the committee set up by that meeting and discuss the position. In the meantime he had cabled to the Imperial Government, pointing out that there was a good deal of dissatisfaction in this country in regard to the rates proposed by the shipping companies. Every man in touch with the position agreed that the rates would very seriously affect the producing industries. He had not yet received a reply to his' cablegram.
