HOSPITAL BOARD. Stratford, Nov. 9. The Stratford Hospital Board met this morning. Present: Messrs C. I). .Sole (chairman), E. Mclv. Morison, C. R. Finncrty, J. O'Xeill, and E. Walter. Dr. D. Steven, medical superintendent, reported that during October 25 patients were admited, 2(i were discharged, and there were two deaths. Seventeen remained in hospital at the end of the month. Nine operations were performed under anaesthetics. There were ten soldier out-patient attendances. The isolation ward liad been closed since October IS.—Received. The matron, Miss S. G. Beedle, reported that Miss Helen 0. Grant had completed her probation term. There was now a full nursing and kitchen staff at the hospital.—Received. .Mr. i\ (j. Coleman, District Health Inspector, reported that the following cases of infectious diseases were notified and dealt with during the month of October: Diphtheria 1, pneumonia 4, pneumonic iniluenza, etc.. & One sample of milk, two samples o! bread, two samples of sausages, and two samples of butter were takeu during the month, and butter was weighed in two shops.— Received. A letter was received from the town clerk intimating that the Borough Council was willing to undertake the work of asphalting the main approaches to the hospitiil. The chairman congratulated Messrs Morison and I'innerty on being again elected members of the board, and ex' pressed the hope tfiat Messrs Walter and O'Neill would consent to be again nominated for the board. Mr. Walter said the reason lie did not seek re-election was because he did not like the work. The work of tile board had to be run on business lines to a certain extent, ami sometimes he felt that he was dealing very hard with people who were down on their luck, The difficult part, of course, was to know where io draw the line between those whom they should let go and those they should insist on paying. He iiad, for this reason, hoped that someone else would fill his place, but if he was wanted he would consent to nomination again. GENERAL. 'Fne election of members for tho Stratford County Council, with the ex> ception of the East Riding, will take place to-morrow (Wednesday). Mr. C. E. Finnerty has been elected unopposed to represent the Whangamomona County Council on the Stratford [tospita! Board. The final gathering for this session of the Boys' and Girls' Improvement Association took place last evening. Tho chairman (Rev. C. W. Howard) in a few well-chosen remarks opened the proceedings. There was a large attendance of members. Mr. T. E. Bridger gave an instructive and humorous lecture,on the use and care of the teeth. The following items were rendered: Piano solo (Reg. Hollands): song, "A Broken Doll" (.Toan Morton); humorous reading (Ted Alger) ; duet (Ivy Fowler and Lily Doncastor) ; recitation (Les. Byron); recitation, "Little Floe's Letter" (Jean Moore). Supper was provided by the association and handed round to all present. The chairman expressed his thanks to all those who had in any way assisted in the work of the association, and especially to those who had provided the lectures. Mr. W A. Curteis, speaking on behalf of the public, said that the n|ectings_ had not only been helpful to the boys and girls, but had proved to be a source of comradeship. He had had many inquiries as to the work of the association during his .. visits to schools in the country districts. The meeting concluded with the National Anthem.
