GREENWOOD'S TRIAL
BRILLIANT SPEECH FOR DEFENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Assu,—Copyright. London, Nov. 8. At the trial of Greenwood the judges are summing up, and the verdict will be given to-morrow. To-day was given up to counsels' speeches. Interest is unabated and betting on the result is widespread in the north of England. Books are being compiled with professional thoroughness in the mining districts, even women laying odds. Sir E. Marshall Hall (who appeared for the accused) in a brilliant speech, lasting .'II hours, emphasised the doctors' doubts regarding the cause of death. Two doctors of high reputation gave evidence that Mrs. Greenwood died of morphia poisoning, not arsenic. The defence was justified in suggesting that Doctor Griffiths made an unfortunate mistake and gave a dose of Fowler's solution at 8 o'clock, which accounted for the presence of arsenic, and completed the disaster by administering a whole grain of morphia later instead of half a grain.
