DISTRICT NEWS.

OAIUJRA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday, October 29, ult., a large crowd assembled for the school social, wfcich was held in the local hall. It was a beautiful J night, and visitors came front every district : between New Plymouth and Okato. Almost ; evsry home in Oakura was The j programme consisted of the children s items, | which were Interspersed with dances. Songs ■ were very pleasingly and tunefully rendered. , The organised games proved quite a novelty, j :,n'd were thoroughly c-njoyed. Excitement ; ran Ugh amongst the contestants and on- j lookers. The girls played exceedingly well, ; and won most of the gamc<-.. Ethel Morns ( and Irene WllUlns, dressed in character, sang ; "A-heo" In fine style. The ge™ item of the evening was the dancing steps for the performance of which the children were given a rousing encore. So much was it enjoyed that a special request was made Tor it to he repeated after supper. The little dancers made a rer.v pretty and pleasing spectacle, and must have made older persons feel envious of their buoyant, lively steps. On some future occasion we hope to have a repetition of the dancing steps. All items were encored and accompaniments were played by Miss Pearson. The children's items weTc as follow: Song, "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles"; recitation, "King Pippin," Primers; organised .game, "Rolling Chase Ball"; song, "Don' Cry, Frencliy"; song, "Tennessee"; organised games, ''Rolling Chaso Ball," in two lines, song, "A-bee"; dancing steps. As the chairman (Mr. \Y. K. Morris) of the School Commiltee was called away unexpectedly, he was unahle to make the remarks usually made on such occasions. However, he has Blnce written to the teacl-er (Mrs. A. Pearson) thanking her for the assistance she had given the committee by preparing the scholars, and congratulating her on the success achieved. Ho also wished to thank those wl-o had so willingly helped j to make the social such a success. j The dance music was supplied by Messrs. A. E. R. rearson (piano), and F. 15. Morris (violin). Extras were played by Mrs. W. IC. Morris,, and Misses V. Smith and Price. Messrs. W. K. Morris and C. H. Harris were 11.0.13, and discharged their. duties in a capable manner. A most enjoyable supper was handed round. The people of the district are to bo complimented upon their ready and liberal response to the committee's appeal for funds for improving school grounds. After all expenses are paid a balance of nearly £lO remains.
