WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The long talked of branch of the Fanners' Co-operative Organisation Society is now an established fact, being at present housed in one of the Harbor Boanl's sheds pending the building of a store in concrete as soon as cement supplies are obtainable. Mr. A. G. Grant, of Hawera, is in charge. He has had considerable experience in all classes of merchandise. The Organisation hopes to get shipments from Auckland and South Island ports direct to Waitara.

At the inquest on the remains of Lawrence William Smith, found in the Waitara river, it was shown that deceased attempted to ford the Maunganui river on June 21 when it was in high flood. His horse was found next day, and also his overcoat, but there was no further trace at that time. A verdict of "death by drowning" was returned.

I notice that Tikorangi and Urenui can lay claim to a cricket team. What abqut Waitara? I feel certain there are enough enthusiasts of the pastime here to take it up if a meeting were calied. I would suggest, that old cricketers should call a meeting. .Superintendent Hugo made an inspection of the Waitara Fire Brigade on Wednesday last, and exercised and examined the men in wet and dry practices. He also conferred with the chairman and secretary of the Fire Board.

The Waitara Fire Brigade met the Clifton Lodge of Druids in a contest of cards last week, it resulting in a draw. Challenges have to the Legion of Frontiersmen and the Foresters' Lodge. It is rather late now to suggest that a shield be competed for amongst the different societies in the town. Probably next winter something might be done in this way.

The s.s. Leitrim was expected to finish its loading on Monday, but owing to the bad weather loading has been slow.
