Nine members of the crew of the Commonwealth steamer Bellata have been convicted on charges of disobedience and combining to impede the navigation of the ship. They received sentences of from four to twelve weeks' imprisonment. The charges arose through the cooks refusing duty unless an extra hand was engaged, and the men refusing to commence the voyage without the cooks. The Seamen's Union now threaten .to hold a stop-work meeting to discuss what action to take.

Mr. Justice Edmunds has decided to subpoena fifteen members of the Assembly to give evidence before the commission of inquiry into the question of members' salaries.
