OPENING OF THE SEASON. 1 NEW PLYMOUTH CIUB. l''ine weather favored the oflldul opening ot the New -Plymouth Bowling Club's green yesterday. There was a. large gathering of players, the Fitzroy, Yogeltmvn, a»d Wcj>l End Clubs being represented, 1 Mr. A. K. Smart, president of the Club, in declaring the greens open for play, extended a hearty welcome to visting bowlers. "He spoke of the increasing popularity of bowling throughout the Dominion, there now being something like 12,000 members of bowling clubs in all parts of New Zealand. The iN'ew Plymouth Club, he said, had increased Its ordinary membership to 120, while there were also eight or nine honorary members. On this, the :)oth annual opening of the Brougham Street greens, Mr. Smart said it gave him pleasure, not unmixed with regret, to announce that the club had secured new' greens in Courtenay Street, and that the old greens had been disposed of. He fell sure that the facilities offered by the new property would more than counter-balance the regret at leaving the old familiar spot. He thanked the ladies for their generous help in supplying afternoon tea 011 special occasions. Representatives of visiting clubs brie.iy re-. sponded to tto welcome extended by the New Plymouth Club. Mr. Smart then presented the championship singles shield and trophy to Mr. C. N. Johnson, and prizes for the Challenge pairs to Messrs. Coldsworiby and Fookes. Mr. C. Carter, in the absence of tho vice-president, presented the Perry Cup for the senior handicap singles to the president of tte club, Mr. A. K. Kmart. Mrs. A. K. JHE FITZROY CLUB. Yesterday afternoon the I?it7.roy Bowllns Club opened the ffrecn for the season. Tiie president (Mr. A. S. Brooker) extended a welcome to the visitors, and particularly to the ladies. To the visitors he expressed resTet that tl'e prevailing weather had not been conducive to a fast green. The achievements of the club, said the president, during ing the past season had not been as successful as the.v would have wished, they had been able to win the banner In the Northern Division, but had met defeat In tho playoff at tie hands of Hawera, and he congratulated Fitzroy on their win. Presentation of club trophies followed, the championship of the club was won by Mr. S. J. Smith dale president) for the second time, and the cup was handed to him by Mr. Brooker. The runner-up, Mr. Jackson, was absent through illness. The gold medal for the bindieap singles also went to Mr. Smith Mr. Brooker also mentioned that the Club had won the trophy, which was competed for annually between Fitzroy and i?t. John's (Wanganul). Special reference was made to the work of the caretaker (Mr. W. Avery), for the efforts he had made regarding the green. On behalf of visiing Clubs, best wishes for a successful season were extended to Fitzroy by .Messrs. F. Okey (Vogeltown), F. Bellrlnger (Ne\v Plymouth), Sampsor (Zaitara), and R. .1.
