THE LOANS.

RAILLESS TRAMS REJECTED,

DAVID STREET EXTENSION OPPOSED. LOAN FOR NEW CARS CARRIED. A poll on three loans in comujtion with tramways was taken in New Plymouth yesterday. Out of ft roll of about 4OUO the number who voted was 113 li, and the decision was a 501) majority in favor of the £22,500 loan for purchasing three additional cars, installation of triangle (for turning cars), and improvements U> track; and the rejection of the other two Joans.

The second issue was the question of the installation of trackless cars to Vogeltown, and an extension of the present system to Wostown, the proposal being to borrow £-13,">00 for the work. This was defeated decisively, the voting being S:O3 for arid Sl2 against. The alternative in the matter of tramways extensions, namely trackless tu both suburbs, costing £"27,300, was defeated by a majority of 144 votes.

The number of informal votes cast on each proposal was considerable, and in the case of the large loan totalled 121. This, in many cases, arose through the action of a number of people who wished to record an emphatic decision against, and who struck out both lines on the ballot paper, thus rendering it informal

An analysis of the voting shows that the ratepayers of Vogeltown and Westown voted for the trackless cars, and in the case of the former, the majority in favor was 02.

Polling arrangements, in charge of the municipal returning oilicer (Mr. R. Day) worked very satisfactorily, and the results were announced about 7.45 p.m.
