THE SUGAR THEFTS.
ACCUSED BEFORE COURT. By Telegraph.—l'ress Association. Auckland, Nov. 1. Two carters and a shipping foreman employed on the wharves have been arrested and charged with being concerned in the theft of sug*r from the Chelsea Vefinery between March 31 and. June 30, during which period forty tons were reported to be missing. The Colonial Sugar Company bad offered a reward of £SOO for evidence leading to conviction.
In the Police Court, in connection witli the theft of sugar in transit from the Chelsea refinery, Charles Lilliwell, foreman in charge of the wharf delivery of the New Zealand Express Company, and Francis George Forbett, a lighterman, were charged with the theft of sugar valued at £tß 3s 53, and were remanded, bail of £l5O each being allowed. "
Edwin George Thompson, grocer, Valentine Townsend, carter, Charfe John Anderson, carter, and Edward F. Bowden, carter, were charged with receiving stolen sugar, and were remanded on bail (Thompson £l5O and the others £IOO each). The alleged thefts form part of a total of 40 tons of sugar missing. The police are stated to be on the track of other parties. . ~...;■ -..
