LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Superintendent T. Hugo, who »s paying a visit of inspection to the district, will inspect the New Plymouth and Fitzroy Fire Brigades this evening at 8.45 sharp.

The Hawera branch of the New Zealand Breeders' Association decided on Saturday to institute a Jersey Oaks of £SOO, several local breeders making donations of twenty-five guineas and lesser amounts. The entrance fee was fixed at 10s Cd.

A lad, Thomas Potter, aged 17 years, was arrested at Rahotu on Sunday morning by Constable D. J. O'Neill on a charge of the theft of a watch and money the previous day, the property of Mr. F. Dawson, for whom Potter had been working. The accused was brought before Messrs. T. P. Hugbson uul W. R. Wright, J.'sP., at Rahotu yesterday, when he pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. The allocation of the £IOO,OOO set apart by the Government for the assistance' of superannuated public servants has. it is understood, been decided upon; and the bonus, which is for one *ear only, is now about to be paid. In making the allocation, the aim has been to give relief principally to widows and the lower-paid retired men. Widows now receive £lB a year, and they will receive an additional £26 and £2O for each child. Thus a willow with three children will receive £BO extra, and this will not interfere with the civil widows' pension on the new scale. For the lower-paid civil servants receiving £5-2 or so, there are to be grants of £4O, practically bringing the superannuation up to £2 a week. Nominations for members of the Taranaki County Council for the next triennial period closed at noon yesterday. Mr. A. Morton has beon renominated for the Mangorei Riding, Messrs. .1. An-1 drews and J. >S. Oonnett for the Waitara Riding, Mr. S. Vickers for the Omata Riding, and Mr. J. Wooldridge for the Okato Riding: whilst Mr. A. V Penwarden has been nominated in place of Mr. C. Andrews, who has been one of the representatives in the Okato Riding aud is not seeking re-election. Mr. J. Andrews and Mr. S. Vickers have been nominated ns representatives of the county on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. As the nominations do not exceed the number of candidates required, no election will be necessary. The distribution of war trophies allocated to the No. 8 Group has been finally decided upon as follows: New Plymouth will receive a siege gun, Hawera a howitzer; Stratford, Eltham, Manaia, Opunake, each a iieldguu; whilst Kaponga, Waitara, Inglewood and Patea will receive trench mortars. In addition, 18 machine guns have been distributed, each of the nine areas receiving two, and it was suggested that these should be given to country districts, as the towns had already received machine guns. The Egmont County Council briefly discussed the position yesterday, and decided to let "the matter stand'over until next meeting, pending suggestions from the Town Board as to housing, etc'. H was sug--posted that one of the machine guns should be allocated to Rahotu, and another to Pihama.

At the Eltham Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, a youth named Thomas Harris, of New Plymouth, was charged with stealing a.wa'toh from the milking B hed of Mr. Cijrl Marx, of Mangatoki, and pleaded guilty. Constable Townsend stated that he had received advice of the theft of the watch, and when he. saw Harris in town on Saturday he questioned him and subsequently discovered the watch upon him. Accused had been working for it while at Lepperton. He had arrived in this district a few days ago, and had slept out two or three nights. On one of these nights he had wandered into Marx's milking shed and, apparently assailed by a sudden temptation, had taken the watch. Nothing was previously known against the lad. The lad's mother promised to lake him back to New Plymouth, and to do her best to keep him at work. Tho Bench convicted the tod and ordered him (o <-ome up for sentence if called upon within the next six months.—Argus Speaking at a meeting of the Ha were branch of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association on Saturday, the president (Mr. R. J. Innn) said: "It was of no use any member selling an animal that he could not honestly recommend, and, besides doing himself no good, lie would be damaging every breeder. Far better that the owner or breeder should kill an inferior animal or fiend il to the works than to induce some purchaser to buy what was not up to standard. T take it that every breeder realises that if we are in continue to progress every man must determine to increase the but. ler-fat yield of his herd. The price of hind does not enter into the question, In my mind, very much so long as wo can build up herds to average 3001b or snore of butter-fat. These are the people who will make the dairying industry a success and enah'e us to compete with any other country in the world." NORTH BRITISH GARDEN HOSE is (he most lasting of all rubber hose. All hardwaremen and rubber stores enn supply jt. US
