A NEW PLYMOUTH NEED.
HOSTEL FOR GIRLS. The Committee of the Girls' which is being established in New Plymouth, has decided to make a dii-ect ap* peal to the public, and a subscription. list is being opened in both papers. That there is urgent need for the opening of such a hostel is known to everyone, and the worthiness of the cause for which donations are asked is such as will appeal to everyone. During this last week many of th« citizeifs of New Plymouth were ap« proached for interest and help as ret gards the excellent concert and enter* tainment arranged by Mrs. Weston, and the response has greatly encouraged th« promoters, and Ims convinced them that the sympathy of the general public is solidly behind them in their efforts to establish a home for our girls, who are earning their own living, and have no other home to stay in. Accoimnoda« tion of/.aiiy sort is very difficult to get, and there are many lonely girls who are) at present living ift unhealthy and lin* congenial surroundings , without anjj home comforts and away from suitable) companions. A good hostel where thd girls would be eared for by a comfort* able and kindly matron, and whiclj would be managed, in the background, by a responsible committee, would be (X very welcome change to many girls whq cannot get any such accommodation ftfl present. Another strong reason for the prompt establishment of such a hostel is that immigrants are coming to New Zealand in ever increasing numbers, most ot them of a very good type. Taranaki and New Plymouth hope to get their share, and a place should be provided for these girls who will not have any other place ready for them when they reach what should be their new home. •
The Committee has an excellent posal under consideration, and whed properly arranged it will entail the ing of a certain sum of money witnia the next few months, and then wilt eonio the expense, of furnishing and fit* ting up the hostel. A fair amount hj»» already been raised, and the energetic Committee has various enterprises on foot which should result in substantial increases in the funds in hand, but of course considerably more will be need* ed However, the Committee feels sura that the appeal for funds through th» columns of the local Press will'men with a generous response. New Ply* mouth and the surrounding district* have shown in recent years that they can give whole-heartedly and generous* ly to any cause that is' worth aupporti '•, ing, and that needs their help. The I establishment of a girls' hostel ia just , I such a cause. ■ I Mr*. A. K. Walker, chairwoman of J the Committee, has started the fund „' with a donation of £lO.
