THE MAYORALTY.

RETIREMENT OF MR. J. CLARKE. | A statement which appeared in Saturday's Daily News regarding the pending retirement of the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. .1. Clarke) Brought from our evening contemporary a. denial, in which it was slated Mr. Clarke "said that there was no authority whatever for the statement as to his contemplated retirement from the Mayoralty."' This naturally gave a confusing impression of the position, and to remove this it should be stated that it is correct that the Mayor contemplates retiring. Seen last night, Mr. Clarke stated that though he had not authorised the information in the News, it was correct that he was resigning shortly. Stress of business and the state of Mrs. Clarke's health have been instrumental in bringing about Mr. Clarke's decision.
