THE PRINTING TRADE.
RECENT AWARD MADE CLEAR. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The following interpretations •of doubtful points in the recent awards in the printing trades have been hied in the Arbitration Court:— Bonus.—The bonus is to be paid retrospectively to May 1, 1920, to all workers specified. Holidays.—Pay fo? holidays is not retrospective beyond September 13, 1920. Newspaper workers.—As these employees receive a quid pro puo in six days' holiday on full pay per annum, they are only entitled to extra pay for working- on Christmas Day and Good "Friday. Extra payment hitherto made is abolished. Ktone-hands.—As there is no special provision for a third stone-hand, and the language of the clause is that of the parties themselves, the proper course is to continue the prevailing custom. Piece-hands.—On linotypes, in computing "earnings" for standing time and work on time, 10 per cent, for nightwork should be included, but not the lis bonus. The maximum of 10s for night-workers does not apply to piecehands. The only retrospective provisions are in regard to wages and bonus. Other matters under special headings of general conditions as to piece-work and "guarantee of hours," are separate and distinct from wages provisions. "No doubt," states the Court, "the general language used in respect of retrospective payment ha* given rise to ambiguity in the .award, but it was not the intention of the Court to impose upon employers retrospective payment in respect of these last-mentioned matters.
