. HOUSING! AMENDMENT BILL. In introducing the Housing Amendment Bill on Wednesday night, Sir Wra. Berries said he was quite prepared to listen to objections to the provisions in the Bill, or to suggestions for its improvement. This is a very proper spirit, for the measure is non-contentious, and every effort should be made to remove the defects of the original measure, to extend its usefulness, and to help forward the object which it was intended to achieve. So far, though the previous Act meant well, it has accomplished but small results. This was partly due to the heavy cost of building and the restricted amount fixed by the Government. The maximum cost for houses in wood and concrete has been increased by £IOO in each case, and this may lead to more rapid progress in providing new houses. Among the other new features is power to lease land so as to enable the Bill to apply to townships where the leasehold tenure prevails—a pt«p that i« in the right direction. The
