. COST OF LIVING PROTEST. By T»lejrraph—J're.s.i Association Christehurcli, Oct. 25. At the request of the Woolston Borough Council, Mr. J. McCornbs, M.P., addressed a meeting on Saturday on the high cost of living. Resolutions were carried protesting against the high cost of living and also against the Government closing Parliament at present, and urging that the session be extended to discuss the problem; also thanking Mr. MoCombs, as the local member, and '"the other comrades of the Labor Party for their light against a profiteering Government."
MESSAGES CONCERNING THE CHATHAM. Wellington, Last Night. The Admiralty's message referred to In the cables is: "On the. occasion of the departure of the Chatham, the Board of Admiralty .wish to congratulate the Governor-Gciieral and the Govermnen'. on the addition of this modern cruiser to the New Zealand naval force. His a matter of special satisfaction to the board that she commences her career under their auspices at a time when such a distinguished naval officer is Gov-ernor-General of that great Dominion." His Excellency sent the following reply: "My Government and I greatly appreciate the message of congratulation sent by the Board on the occasion of the departure of the Chatham. The presence of this ship in New Zealand waters will foster :ihe sea spirit amongst the people of the Dominion and form a link in the chain of the Empire's naval strength. I beg to add my pergonal thanks for kind reference to myself.—Jellicoe."
