SAMOAN POLICE FORCE.
j NEW COMMISSIONER APPOINTED. i By Telegraph—Press Assnclatlon.. Auckland, Last Night. The post of Commissioner of Police in Samoa has been accepted by Sub-Inspec-tor W. G. Wohlmann, of Auckland, who will leave for his new station by the Mokoia on Saturday. Sub-Inspector Wohlmann has made a reputation in the force for ability as an executive officer. He was appointed to the District Commissioner's office at Invercargill when the Southland police district was first formed, and early in 1907 he was transferred to the Auckland office. At the end of 1911 he took charge of the Waihi district with the rank of sergeant, and in 1914 he received the rank of Senior-Sergeant. He got his commission as Sub-Inspector in March, 1917, when he was transferred to Christchurch. and a year later he became Sub-Inspector at the Auckland city station.
The office which he has. now accepted is one calling for considerable organising capacity and tact, for it entails supervising the transition of the Samoan police force from a semi-military to a civil stwtus. The Samoan police are recruited chiefly from the ranks of the military who have been safe-guarding the residential interests in Samoa.
