OUT OF HAND. fOLICE OBLIGED TO SHOOT. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright Capetown, Oct. 23. Following on the arrest of Masabalamba, the president of a native workers' organisation at Port Elizabeth, a crowd of natives attacked the police station. The police repulsed three attacks, but eventually the mob invaded the station. The police and a number of returned soldiers then opened fire. The casualties are estimated at 40 to 50, including 14 Villed, two being Europeans.—Reuter.

The Free State Nationalist Conference at Bloemfontein, on the motion of Mr. Herttog, adopted a resolution affirming the right of the Union a.t any time by constitutional means to decide on the form of government and alter the existing form in any way, acknowledging the right of secesiion from Britain or to break any existing bond between the Union and Britain, and also declaring (gainst any closer Imperial union.—Aus.jf Z.
