Mr, S. G. Smith, M.P., who has been spending the week-end at his home, returns to Wellington by this morning's train. The death occurred at the Rnngialea Home, New Plymouth, yesterday, of Mr. John Andrews, a former resident of the Inglewood district for many years. Deceased was 7o years of age.' Mounted Constable J. Caution, of Wellington, has been appointed to the New Plymouth police stall', t<j> jill the vacancy caused by the death J. VVroblenski. The Rev. A. H. Barnett, Church of England Home Missioner in Taranaki for the past live years, has accepted riie cure of Xinwald, in the Christchurch diocese, and leaves for JtJie south in January next. 'lnformation lias been received in Wellington of the death of Air. Paul Clifford, engineer, of Waihi. Mr Clifford was an amateur aatrononyer and meteorologist, and had acted as observer for some time at Waihi. An old.identity of Queenstown, Mr. Thomas Luekie, died from heart trouble. Born in Dundee in 1835, he was apprenticed to the shipbuilding trade. At an early age he went to sea, and arrived in New Zealand Sli years ago. Mr. .Robert Sinclair, of the Lands and Deeds Registry Department, Christchurch, who. recently died, was a native of Shetland and came to New "ealnnd many years ago. For about :j(i years he was employed in thq department, most of that time being in ilie Duncdin branch, and afterwards at luvercar<'ill, and, for the last few years, at Wellington, where lie occupied the position of Second-Assistant Land Registrar
A Press Association telegram from Te Kniti states that Air. Thomas W. Fishoj', lute Under-Secretary for Native Affairs, died suddenly on (Sunday. He arrived at I'e Kniti on Friday on" a visit to Mr. W. Ualsby. He seemed to be in his usual health on Sunday, but while having tea suil'ered an attack. His breathing became dillieult, and a doctor was summoned, but: Air. Fisher expired shortly after the doctor's arrival. The late Mr. Fisher formerly resided in New Plymouth.
Old settlers throughout the district will (says the Wairarapa Daily Times) regret .to hear of the death of another of Ihe last-disappearing band of pioneers, m the person of Mr. John A. Pain, of Porirua, and formerly of AiarUnborotigh. The late Air. Pain was born at Petone in 1844, his parents having arrived there in the second vessel a year or so before. lie moved later to Johnsonville, and aflenvards joined the Mounted Defence Force, and' saw service thi-on-rh Uie Maori war. bcinc present at Patca and other casements.
