NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire.—Special to News ) Wellington, Last Xight. The fields were big and of good quality. The public attended in great numbers, and the Governor-General was present. The racing throughout tie day was exciting, and a feature was the great number of remarkably cioso finishes. The principal handicap of the day, the Wellington Handicap, which is run over a mile and three furlongs, drew a big field, jp which form pointed to four horses— Kilrush (a winner at Duuodin), Glen Canny (the Avondaie Cup winner), Kllgc.nr (who scored In tl e Masterton Cup), and (Jus Bag (whose track work had been of a high order), fllcu Canny got a bad run and the other three were amongst the first four to finish. Three useful lightweights in (laslmg, Kilgour, and Bonnie Heather had a hand in the finish, hut had llie solidly burdened Kilrush not met trouble before he came to the turn he would have beaten them all. In a great finish (has Bag and Ronnie Heather flashed past the box together, and the judge hoisted Gas Bag's numbor.

Sume partioulariy fine two-year-olds were paraded for the two juvenile events. Mermln' and national proved too good for the rout, of tie Held iji the Weliesiey Stakes. ilermin won, but Rational was travelling faster at the finish. However, Mermln appeared to have a little In hand.

The day was a triumph for the imported sire Absurd. His stock won both the two-year-old races, and in one of ttem secured first, second, and third places. In the Taita Handicap, Backsheesh, Prinze Ferouz, and Capping Day were fighting out the finish, when Winning Hit appeared, coining fast. The four crossed the line with less than a neck separating the lot. rapping Day, who paid a great prtfe, got thr- verdict h.v halt a 1 Pad. Winning Hit was placed second, Backsheesh third, and Trluze Petouz fourth. Prince Ferouz should do better on Monday.

Trespass slipped at the start and fell. For the Bimutaka Handicap, Saimovar made the early running, and was closely followed by Adopted and Counter Stroke. Adopted and Samovar were in front at the straight entrance, and at the distance Warrawee beeanio prominent. Isabel came fast from the-half distance, and hard ridden got up to win by a head. The big handicap was a great belting race Gleu Canny was s„nt out a very hot order! but his backers got a jioov run. Red Ribbon on tho rails, was first out of Ihe tapes, but she soon lost her place. Tassing the stand Bonnie Heather led Gas Bag. Dawasogne, lenterfleld, and KLlgour. Bonnie Heather and Oas Bag led down the back with Tenterfield and Kilgow Five furlongs from home Bonnie Heather went back a hit and 80-Peep went to the front, witl o, ls Bag at the boiiom of the straight. The Hurdles was won nicely by Maniahera, and both llk- other placed horses, Falsi,iff and Ladoguer, ran good races.

from the leading division when something happened, and he failed to go on. Jr looked as if he got a burup. The finish was a close one. Solfanello and Rouen were fighting it out when at the very death Royal Stag appeared on the 3eane and finishing strongly got the verdict by a .bead.
