SMART SET DIGGERS.

A POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT. The popularity of "digger" entertainers was emphasised by, the hearty patronage accorded the Australian. Smart Set troupe, who opened a taxes-night season in New Plymouth at the Empire Theatre last night. The entertainers were rendered. The company 'prides the opening number, which heralded a bright show. In s'erious and in comic vein the artists were equally successful, and some very pleasing musical numbers were rendered. The company provides itself in the possession of five female impersonators, who played no small part in the programme.

Comic scenas and operas were prominent, and some laughable turns were presented.

As a singer, Mr. Geo. Castles became a pronounced favorite after his rendering of "For You Alone," and in response to a encore he gave an artistic interpretation of "La Donne et Mobile." Mr. Jock Thomson was very successful in his numbers, "Jmit You and 1" and "Annie Laurie" (encore). Harp accompaniment was played by Mr. Albert Torzilb, who earlier in the evening re j ccived an ovation for his solos. The comic turns were in the hands of an able number of the company. Harold Shaw's Scotch ditties were verv originally rendered, and the song and dance "Hoys, Boys Boys," by Bobbie Roberts (the bad girl), was very good, The scandal item, "Over the Fence," by Fred Whitlow, produced roars of laughter. The same artist was responsible for some good work in the dramatic sketches, "Mia Rosa" and, with Charles Holt "The Burgular." "La Fleiir," the dance by Mr. "Tiki" Carpentier, was a popular' item, which was gracefully carried through. In another dance item of different character Keg sawyer and Ralph McLaughlin gave the Argentine Tango. The company were .given an ovation after their finale: •And Now the War is Ended." The Smart Set Diggers appear again tonight and on Monday, when a complete change of programme will be presented. e

The management state that there wm a misunderstanding over the prices last "iglit. This caused some dissatisfaction at the theatre last evening. The management then refunded the h differ•mce to each of the patrons. Prices for to-night will be: Reserves (at Collier's) os, Stalls 4s, Pit 2s (plus tax).
