Mr. Newton King had yesterday sudieiently recovered from his recent illness to he able to again attend to business. Mr. A. L. Tresidder, who was on the stall' of the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court some years ago, has been appointed Clerk, of the Court at Ashburton.

A London cable says an Earldom has been conferred on Viscount Buxton, the retiring Governor-fieneral of South Africa, for his service in South Africa.

Mr. M. H. Bollinger, superintending engineer for Messrs Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., Wellington, is visiting Now Plymouth. Mr. Bollinger is an old Taranaki boy,: having formerly lived in the Omnia district.

Mr. Charles William Flowers, who died in Invercargill at the age of 77 years, was believed to be the last veteran of the American Civil War living in New Zealand. He had lived in New Zealand for about 44 years

Acute pneumonia caused the death in the Christchurch Hospital of William Arnst, once widely known as a cyclist. He was the elder brother of "Dick" Arnst, sculling champion of the world, and of J. Arnst, who also was a wellknown evclist.

The Rev. E. C. Crosse, D.5.0., M.C., Croix de Guerre, M.A. (Qxon), Ims been appointed headmaster of CJirjst's College, in succession to the late Mr. G. K. Blanch (says a Press telegram from Christehureh). The Rev. Crosse is at present assistant master at Marlborough College, England. During the great war he was attached to the Bth Devons, and was senior chaplain with the seventh division. He is .13 years of age. Mr. C. J. Belcher recently intimated his intention of retiring from the Eltham County Council, of which he lias been chairman for some years. A large number of ratepayers waited upon Mr. Belcher on Wednesday, and asked him to reconsider his decision. Mr. Belcher said lie would have liked a holiday after his sixteen years on the Council. b,it at the same time he was willing to serve for another term.

The Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe will be in Christehureh during farnival Week. Their Excellencies will leave Wellington for Lyttehon on November 5. On the following morning they will be given a public reception, and in the afternoon they will to the C.J.C. races at Riecarton. On November 8 they will leave for Dunodin, and remain there until Wednesday, when they will return to Ohristchurch, leaving'Lyttelton for Wellington on November l'i

Mr. Samuel Hill, Auckland, and formerly of New Plymouth, has been officially informed thut the General will hand to him the Military Cross awarded by His Majesty the King to the late Lieutenant W. J. R. Hill, who died from wounds sustained at, Bapaume,* where he displayed singular bravery in heading an attack on an enemy post. Lieutenant Hill served in Samoa, fiallipoli, and France. He was formerly on the literary staff of the New Zealand Herald and the Wellington Evening Post, and was well-known in Taranaki Mr. ,). H. Stringer, formerly Chief Inspector for the Christchureh City Council, is dead; aged 8:1. The late Mr. Stringer was born in London, and at the age of 17 joined the Royal Artillery. After a distinguished career in the Crimea, he remained in the Army till his departure for New Zealand in the latter part of 185(1. He landed at Lyttelton, and spent two years in exploring the wilds of Western Otngo. Before joining the Christchureh City Council lie was in the Railway Department. One of his sons is Registrar of Canterbury College.
