THE VICTORIA LEAGUE.
NEW PLYMOUTH BRANCH. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Victoria League was held in the League's new rooms (late Kia Ora tea rooms) last night, there being a very large attendance of ladies, with a fair sprinkling of gentlemen. The rooms were tastefully decorated, and the enthusiasm of all present spoke well for the future advancement of the League's aims. Despite the considerably increased size of the League's present rooms, the accommodation was taxed to the utmost. Mr. C. H. Burgess was voted to the chair. Mrs. Johns read a paper on the aims and objects of the League. The president (Mrs. Burgees), speaking of the past efforts of thl League, said that the League was in its infancy when the war broke out, and then all efforts were concentrated on war work. Only during the last few months had the League been able to look to itself. It was very gratifying, Mrs. Burgess said, to see how the helpers had rallied round to forward the interests of the League. A donation had been sent to the mother League at Home as a small recognition of the great help given to the overseas branches Many enquiries had been received from gentlemen as to whether the League's rooms were open to them and their friends, and this, said Mrs. Burgess, was the particular aim of the Leagueto encourage social meetings and literary evenings under its auspices. The financial balance showed a credit of £flO. The great necessity of the new members was to bring more members. There was no reason, said Mrs. Burges, why the present membership of 300 should not be doubled and it was confidently expected that this would be done. In conclusion, Mrs. Burgess 'thanked all those who had taken an interest in and helped to advance the League. Reference was made to many letters of thanks from people in the backblocks to whom books and periodicals had., been sent, and Mrs. Burgess made a further appeal to members to bring along more books.
ELECTION OP OFFICERS. Mrs. T. A. B. Bailey proposed Mrs. Burgess as president, in recognition of her valuable work for the League in th? past, and Mrs. Burgess 'was duly elected to this office. Vice-presidents were elected as follows:—The Mayor and Mayoress, Archdeacon and Mrs. Evans, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. B. Bailey, Dr. and Mrs. Home, Mr. 0. H. Burgess", Mr. List, and Mr. W. H. Moycs. Etherington, Denny-Brown, Geo. King, and Stratford. Mrs. Johns was elected as correspondence secretary, and Miss Greig and Mrs. S. Burgess were also appointed secretaries. It was explained by Mrs. Burgess that it was necessary to appoint more than one secretary, as the work entailed was quite beyond one person. Mr. L. C. H. Dawson was elected treasurer, and Mrs. Nicoll as assistant treasurer. Mr. Val Duff was appointed auditor.
