OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The funeral of the late Mr. !'. J. Cook was largely attended on Saturday. The interment took place in the Opunake Cemetery, the Bev. C. Strand (Methodist) performing the last sad rites, anil Kro. Rev. C. Viilmev mul the Imria! service of the Oddfellows' Order, of whom deceased was a member. The brethren were present in strong force to pay their last sad respects. It is reported that blackleg lias made its appearance amongst calves in this district. It is of a mild nature, and m> doubt the Stock Department will prevent any increase in the mortality of young stock. It, is a strange but a notable feature that when the spring season gets out of its proper cog in the cycle of seasons, animal life is sure to sutler. The milk supply at the factories has gone up with a bound after the recent, rains, there being a good growth of grass. There was a noticeable increase of visitors to the Opunake bench on Sunday. Opunake has secured a big gun from the War Trophies Committee, it will be placed in a conspicuous place on the sea front. Mr. Xlarry Whittington, manager of the Opunake cordial factory; had the misfortune ,to lacerate two lingers of liis left hand when sawing boxwood by means of a small circular saw. er of a plot of ground to plant the bulk of it in potatoes. No matter how large the crop is in other districts, the increased price of haulage will keep the price of tubers up to a fair price. The Hawera-Opunake mail 'bus is a big handsome-looking one, and a credit to the road. Opimake is now well supplied with 'bus services to New Plymouth and Havvera. 'Buses or cars leave here in time to catch any mail train, steamer, or dog tight. The inspector's report of the examination of the Convent School is very favorable to the sisters in charge and the work oM-he scholars. At the last meeting of the Opunaltc School Committee, the inspector's repon on the year's work was very favorable, considering the unsettled state of the school since the temporary school \vu. held in the Town Hall. The head teachei reported: "Thank God we are now n new premises." The tennis grounds are already pi)tron-t ised by players, and the prospects for the season look bright. The Town Hoard has decided to form and metal a road to the proposed cottage hospital site. The work will be proceeded with as soon as tlie cottage hospital is commenced. A firewood contractor at Te Kiri lias made arrangements to have fIOOO cords of firewood cut. A block of bush on the Kiri Hoad has been secured for this pur-
