AUSTRALIA.

GENERAL ITEMS. By Tal«r.-»;:.i.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 19, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 19. As a result of a deputation from the Waterside Workers' Federation to Mr. Hughes, the latter is seeking to arrange a conference between the shipowners and the workers to discuss the vexed question of the employers' waterside bureaus, which the federation is seeking to eliminate. The Country Press Conference resolved to ask the Federal Government to searchingly inquire into the manufacture, sale, and business methods of paper makers in all exporting countries, with a view to protecting Australian consumers against exploitation. A big Labor demonstration at the Town Hall was addressed by prominent leaders, and a resolution was carried strongly condemning the Federal Government tar not proceeding with the Federal Capital, their action being characterised as a breach of faith; also protesting against the subjugation of New South Wales interests to "the centralised bureaucracy" in Melbourne. The Capital question is becoming a growing cause of friction amongst members of the various States.
