Mr. H. B. Gray, manager for the Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company, leaves this morning for Wellington. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Gray. Constable Wroblenski, of New Plymouth, died suddenly, about one o'clock this morning. Constable Wroblenski, who has been stationed in this district for several years, had a paralytic strokt some months ago, bnt lie had greatly improved in health of late. Messrs. Brown and Harris, representing the Wangaiiui Chamber of Commerce, arrived in New Plymouth last night to attend the function to-day marking the inauguration of a direct) shipping service between England and Taranaki.

Owing to the death of Mr. S, Clarke Johnson, chief inspector for New Zealand of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Mr. Walter 'F. Lawn-, the chief inspector for Australia, lias been appointed to lake charge temporarily of the company's business in the Dominion, pending other arrangements being made. Mr. H. J. Green will be acting chief inspector for Australia during Mr. Lawry's absence. Mr. La wry arrived in Wellington from Sydney on Monday. The following recent promotions in the Post and Telegraph Department are announced: Mi'. P. W. Penlingtou, district accountant, Wellington, to be assistant postmaster, Wellington; Mr. G. R. Cooper, postmaster, Stratford, to be chief postmaster, Oainaru; Mr. F. G. A. .Kagles, examiner, chief post office, Wellington, to be district accountant, Nelson; Mr. 0. J. Wright, senior examiner accountant's branch, general post office, to be supervisor, M.O. and 8.8., Christchurch; Mr. T. Joll, supervisor of postmen, Christchurcli, to be head mail stall', Auckland.

Before leaving to take up her duties on the stuff of the New Plymouth Boys' High School, Miss K. Campbell was on Friday lust entertained at a complimentary afternoon tea by the teachers of the Central Sehool, all 'the staff being present. The headmaster spoke in complimentary terms of the work done by Miss Campbell, both as a probationer and an assistant, and while regretting her departure from the school, congratulated her on her new appointment. On hehalf of the staff he presented Miss Campbell with a souvenir of her period at the school, and with it their best wishes. Mi. Mcllroy also paid suitable tribute to Miss Campbell's work. The death of Mr. Henry Brittain has deprived Wellington of one of its most prominent and highly-respected citizens, who for over half a century had been in business as a chemist. It was in 1864, while on a pleasure trip round the world' that the late Mr. Brittain took up a position Yis assistant in Auckland, and in 1805 commenced business on his own account in the northern city. Nine years Wter he went to Wellington, and established himself on Lambton Quay. The late Mr. Brittain was born at Walsall, nfar Birmingham, England, and was 80 years of age. He is survived by two sons-Messrs. Harry Brittain (Sydney), and Pprcy Brittain (Wellington), and sis daughters Mrs. .f. W. Bramwell (Feilding), Mrs. ,T. Roberts, Mrs. J. W. Donald Mrs. U ,f. Brabin, and Misses Hetiit and Beatrice Brittain (all of Wellington).
