It is stated on what is considered to be good atuhoritv that Sir James Oarroll will be called to till a vacancy in the Legislative Council (says the Wellington Times). The death occurred at New Plymouth last night ol" Mrs. McAUum, wife of Mr. C. D. McAllum, who will have the sympathy of many friends in his sad loss. Mrs. McAllum was a Miss Coleuian, the only daughter of the late Major Colemail, of New Plymouth. Captain A. West, who left the Port Pirie at New Plymouth, has taken up his new duties as marine superintendent, for the C. and D. Line in New Zealand in succession to Captain J. B. Kainey. The latter has been promoted to the position of joint manager of the C. and D. Lino with Mr. XV. U. de Gruchy.

An old resident of Riverhead, Mr. Francis Deacon, died last week at his residence, Remuera Road, Auckland, at the age of 57. Mr. Deacon was born at Riverhead in 18li3. In 1914 he volunteered for active service and sailed for Egypt with the Main Body. Eighteen months later he was invalided home, and he failed la regain his health. On October ;!ot,h the Governor-Gene-ral (\iseount Jellieoe), accompanied by Lady .Jellieoe, will make his first vicelegal visit to Auckland. His Excellency proposes to arrive in Auckland at 2.5") p.ui. on Saturday.
