SUICIDE IN GAOL.
MAORI PRISONER'S END. £>' Teleerauli.—Pr«« Association. Christchnreh, Last Night. A prisoner named John Levi, aged 41, a prisoner belonging to Rapaki Pfch, who appeared ut the Lyttolton MagUtr&te's Court yesterday on a charge of unlawful interference with a Maori girl under lfl years, was found dead in his call io Lyttclton gaol last night, his throat being cut. At tho inquest the gaoler said Levi wa« issued with, among other things, a regulation bread knife. He seemed quite normal. When witness visited his cell at 0.10 p.m. he found Levi-lying face downwards dead on his mattress. Hi* throat was cut, and the knife was underneath him. The coroner recorded a verdict of iuicide, adding that the gaol authorities had no knowledge of any suicidal tendencies on the part of deceased.
