Smith, M.P., has given notice in the House of Representatives. Mr. Smith has asked the Premier: Whether, in view of the fact that the port of New Plymouth is now recognised and used as a first and last port of call for qeean-foing boats trading between New Zealand. United Kingdom, and America, tho (Jovemment will, when the question of subsidising mail steamers is under review, favorably consider making New Plymouth the first and last port of call for mail steamers trading between New Zealand and Australia, seeing that New Plymouth is the nearest port of call to Australia? In a note to his question, Mr. Smith says the growing importance of tho port of New Plymouth is shown by the fact that the Port Pirio recently made New Plymouth the first and only port of call in New Zealand, and left that port with a cargo of produce valued at £220,000.
