MEN FOR PUBLIC WORKS. By Trietrapli.—Press Association Wellington, Oct. 14. A deputation from Canterbury waited on the Prime Minister to-day and urged the need of pushing on with the Hiley scheme for improving the railway facilities at Christchurch and Lyttelton. Mr. Massey said that the shed at present under construction wouk* be pushed ahead and the Hiley scheme gone on with. The scarcity of labour had been a drawback, but fortunately matters in this connection were improving. The public works returns showed that 700 or 800 more men were employed than was the case a couple of months ago. The truck shortage he hoped to overcome shortly as the result of the orders placed in England. QUARRELSOME BROTHERS. Wellington, Oct. 14. An amusing case came before the magistrate at the Upper Hutt court in which two brothers, elderly farmers, were the principals. The wife of one summonsed the other brother for assaulting her husband. A police constable said that both brothers were an absolute nuisance. Whenever they met they fought, and he often had to remove them from j hotels. ! The Magistrate: I know what I'll do; j I'll prohibit you both, and if either appears before me again I'll send you to gaol. The defendant is fined £l. The latter genially replied: That's the way your Worship! His Worship: Get out of court. Don't talk to me or I'll give you two months.
