AUSTRALIAN GOVERNORS ENTER- I TAINED. I By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyrisht. London, Oct. 13. The Colonial Institute entertained Lord Stradbroke and Sir , Matthew Nathan, newly-appointed Australian Governors. The former declared that ho was confident that Britain would, as she did in the war, do her best in the world's reconstruction. Sir Matthew Nathan said he was glad of Australia's firmness in maintiin ; ng the White Australia policy and her intention to populate the country with the best British type of people. Lord Stanley was absent from the luncheon owing to indisposition. Mr. Layden. the president, intimated that the Institute intended shortly to admit women to the fellowship. In proposing tlio health of Lord Stradbroke he paid a tribute to his work in national defence and fisheries. Sir Matthew Nathan had held most important posts under the Crown. He was going to a State where many difficult problems had to b?. faced, and his knowledge should prove of great value. Lord Stradbroke, in reply, said he was going out with the keenest interest in Australia. She gave of her best in the war and lie was confident she would do her part for tho. general reconstruction thai was going on in the world. Australia would become a power in the wotU, and he believed her power would go on increasing because of her resources. Sir Matthew Nathan compared the development of the States of America with those in Australia. The former ransacked Europe for cheap labour, and secured a heterogeneous population. Aus- . tralia had gone more slowly and had not sacrificed the wealth of the future to the wealth of the present. The maintenance of the high standard of living naturally called for advanced legislation and administration, and the schemes developed in Queensland would be watched with keen interest in the old world It remained for Australia to see that the whole continent was irrigated, and that no drop of water needed for the land should enter the sea.
