At the hearing of a cha v g.-, of theft, forgery, and uttering- preferred against fiuUi S Death u the Stmfoi I Maght'ato's Court on Tuesday, one of ;:■<. j witnesses for the Crown was a young I man named Harold Victor Ruscoe" who denied the truth of a state-meat made by Death to the police that the ehequo in question was given to him by Ruscoe. Death was honorably acquitted of the charge and Ruscoe was subsequently arrested by th e police on practically the same charge which had been laid against Death. He appeared at the Magist'ate's Court this morning before Mr. C. D. Sole, J.P., charged with the theft of a cheque for £4 made out in favor of Charles Richard Abbott, with .having forged the name of C. R. Abbott to the said cheque, and with having uttered the cheque to Ralph S. Death. Sergeant Dale, in asking that accused be remanded until 10.30 a.m. to-morrow, said that Ruscoe had endeavoured to get away when arrested. He therefore asked for substantial bail. The Bench granted the remand asked for, and allowed bail, self in one surety of £SO and two sureties of £IOO each. CHILDREN'S PLAY 0 ROUND. The work of preparing the new childten's playground in King Edward Park is proceeding apace, and the shrubbery in Page Street at Hie entrance to the grounds is now practically all planted. This valuable acquisition to the Stratford public reserves is being provided through the generosity of Mr. Percy Thonr-on, who is hearing the entire expense himself, and when the playground is completed will hand if ovev to the Borough Council free of any liability. The playground will have an area of about" two acres and is situated quite handy to Broadway, being less than ahundred yards along Page Street. A detailed plan h.is been prepared which provides for j lie erection of a shelter shod and paddling pool for the benefit of young children. Some months ago, Mr. Thomson obtained permission from the Hoioiiph Council to use -ji strip of land about, twenty feet wide in Page on the southern boundary of the playground for use as an ornamental plot. This portion has now been prepared and planted, and <drong concrete po-ts have been erected. To-day the shrubs in the beautifying Society's garden plot ! at the south end of the railway station were dug: out owing to the expiry of the j lease from the Railway Department, and] the?,, shrubs were transferred to the j garden plot at the children's playground.
