TYPOGRAPHICAL AWARD.
REPLY TO MR. PIRANI. By TtsletraplL—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In reply to Mr. F. Pirani'* statement; Mr. Carter, president of the Typographical Federation, says the provlkiMf objected to is precisely the same as appearing in the typographical awards for years past. "In any case it has nothing to do with the validity of fhe award, but is merely a matter affecting the workers' organisation for half a century," says Air. Carter. organisations in New Zealand have devoted a portion of their funds towaidl out-of-work allowances, and other benevolent objects among their members, and though the Supreme Court has rulid that industrial unions cannot legally collect dues fur this purpose, we are hopeful of having legislation passed before the expiry of the present award validating such funds, which in the past have removed a burden from the public purse. It is true that the federation was shown a copy of the letter referred tq by Mr. Pirani, but it requires an appeal ■ from both parties in order to validate the questions of interpretation, and the federation has no time to waste over it. It is quite prepared to meet employers by questions of interpretation where there is legitimate doubt, but not to enable awards to bo remodelled under guise of interpretation." In answer to Mr. Carter, Mr. Pirani says that, so far from there being nothing new in the preference clause, fifty per cent, of it is new.
