(By "Moturoa.") A trio of minor meetings will engage tte attention of the sporting world this week. The Whangarel R.C. spring meeting opens to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. The Masterton 1 IJ.O, spring meeting takes place on Thursday and Saturday; and the Dunedin ,T.C. spring meeting on Friday and Saturday. The two flist-named gatherings have attracted a sprinkling of Taranakl-trained horses, and will be of interest to local sports, Alteration, Stork. Hallow, Sypo, Spaimer, and Simple Sam claim engagements at Whangarel, and the prospects of Stork and Alteration look fairly bright. Avondale form suggests that Sir Ralph, First Call, Monopole and Arran are likely to run well forward in their engagements. Glen Canny's victory in the Avondale Cup entails a 101b' penalty for the New Zealand Cup. Tte Imported horse was to have been reserved for the Auckland Cup, but seeing that ho has been entered for the Canterbury Cup, Stead Memorial Cup, Metropolitan Handicap, and Jockey Club Handicap., all run at Rlccarton In November, h!,s owner has probably decided on the southern trip. Amongst the entries for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap are: Gloaming, Arrowsmith, Humbug, Chimera, Michaela, Right and Left, Hymestra, Weldone, Onslaught. 80-Peep, Solfanello, Surveyor, Rouen, and Silver Link. Gloaming, Arrowsmith, and Amythaa figure in the Stead Memorial Cup, and Amytras in the Canterbury Cup. Recent gallops at Riccarton Include Arrowsmith's six furlongs in 1.14 3-3, and Ainythas's seven furlongs In 1.271-5. Both horses are! very well, and a meeting between the pair and Gloaming will be worth going a long way to see.
