TERRITORIAL TRAINING PLATOONS. SCHEME FOR SUPPLYING OFFICERS. By Tilegr&pß.—rress Association. Wellington, Oct. 11. It is announced that, with the object of providing sufficient trained officers and n.c.o.'s for the territorial forces and sen' ior cadet force in the future, the Defence Department has decided to establish special training platoons on the lines of the officers' training corps at Home and after the type of the model platoon at Sling Camp, -which set such a fine example to members of the Expeditionary Force during the war. Special training platoons will be formed at secondary schools and at group and area headquarters, comprising selected volunteers from various senior cadet unit volunteers from various senior cadet units. Membership will be confined to those cadets who have had at least two years' efficient service in the senior cadets, have passed an efficiency test for entrance into the special training platoons and are prepared to attend parades of the special platoon in addition to thosj of their own cadet unit. An endeavor is to be made to attract the right, stamp of lad and membership of the unit is to be regarded as a great honor and privilege, special badges being issued. The platoons formed 'at secondary schools will not exceed 13 per cent, of the total strength of the school contingent, and in the case of a platoon formed at area and group headquarters, not more than 10 per cent. Any cadet unit will bo allowed to join. On the expiration of one year's service in a special training platoon, members will be entitled to sit for a qualifying examination for the rank of sergeant, and on the expiration of a further year's service members will be permitted to enter for the examination for first appointments to commissions, providing they comply with the conditions regarding age, etc. The main point of the scheme'is to provide a supply of efficient officers and n.c.o.'s for the future New Zealand citizen defence forces on a strictly democrats !>»!*
